I'm going to start on what scrupulosity is. Scrupulosity is a religious form of OCD.
I would say the worse form, as the fear is the worst kind of fear, upsetting God, and going to hell. Day by day is torture. As St Alphonsus Liguori called it, the worst kind of persecution. St Ignatius of loyola even contemplated suicide because he had it that bad. Scrupulosity attacks the sacraments of a Catholic the most. The one it attacks the most for me is the sacrament of confession. There are two types in which it attacks it for the scrupulous person. For one scrupulous person they are in the confessional 3 times a day, One off thought, and they are running back to the confessional, Or we have the ones who are so scared of it, they stay away from it completely (this is the bracket I fall into) Which ever bracket they fall into, the result at the end of confession is still the same. The scrupulous will go over what they said in the confessional, over and over again with great anxiety. Did I tell this sin right? Did the priest fully understand what I said? Did I withhold information? Did I lie to the priest? Should I go back and say it all again with a fine tooth comb? Etc....
Every hour of every minute thinking the same thing over and over again. To make matters worse, the scrupulous person has to go participate in the the Eucharist. This is another great worry for the scrupulous. (As well as a million other things) As St Paul says, whoever takes the body and blood of christ unworthy is guilty of profaning it. (1 Cor 11:27)
Scrupulosity is the fear, of what your doing might be sinful.
St Alphonsus Liguori.
The one to me which is the link to scrupulosity is sola fida. Martin Luther the founder of protestantism (kind of, as anything against Jesus church is a form of protestantism) and is the main reason for sola fida. Sola fida is justification by faith alone. Faith is only the means by we are justifyed before God. Martin Luther suffered badly from scrupulosity. This is for me why invented faith alone. This is from his writings and it has scrupulosity written all over it;
When I was a monk I tried ever so hard to live up to the strict rules of my order. I used to make a list of my sins, and I was always on the way to confession, and whatever penances were enjoined upon me I performed religiously. In spite of it all, my conscience was always in a fever of doubt. The more I sought to help my poor stricken conscience the worse it got. The more I paid attention to the regulations the more I transgressed them.
This is the suffering Martin Luther endured. Always on his way to confession, writing his sins down, and doing more and more penances. Apparently, Martin Luther was in the confessional 6 hours!! Putting all the dots on the i's and crosses on the t's (or trying to) So instead going through this treacherous torture, (which it isn't supposed to be) he made up his own doctrines, so he didn't have to do anything, it's all faith. Just like king Henry the Viii. Rather than not having a divorce, just start your own church so you can.
Anti Catholic and protestant apologist James White uses Martin Luthers scruples as a argument against the Church. Basically saying that, you can't have peace with the Catholic sacramental system and using (Romans 5:1.)
Scrupulosity is a mental health issue, yes, there is elements of the Catholic faith that can make it worse, but I have met a protestant that had scrupulosity, and it runs through all religions.
God bless.
